Sixty years ago, the State of Israel was founded. The establishment of Israel as a nation is one of the most important developments in Jewish and world history. How did this come about? If you wish to know the answer to this question, read Dr. Milstein's Volume 1, "A Nation Girds for War" which is a comprehensive treatise on the political, diplomatic and military background to Israel's War of Independence. This volume is meticulously researched and thoroughly documented and footnoted. It is considered "the authentic history" of Israel in the years leading up to 1948 and has been identified by Time Magazine as the "definitive" book on pre-1948 Israel. It is written in a flowing style that will fascinate the expert, the educated, the curious reader, the high school student and the university and graduate school student and professor. Volume 1 deals with Jewish integration and power from the beginning of Jewish settlements in the early 19th century until the war's beginning in the middle of the 20th century. Dr. Milstein describes Arab attacks on the settlements of the Jews and how these attacks force the Yishuv to set up "security organizations" for self-protection. The volume also describes the role that the British played as supervisors of the mandate granted by the United Nations and how the conflicts between the Jews and the British eventually led to the establishment of an underground military industry as Jews were forced to accumulate power and arms in their political and military struggle against the Arabs and against the British. Without understanding "The 70 years of Jewish Power Accumulation in the Land of Israel", it is impossible to comprehend how a few hundred thousand Jews were able to defeat millions of Arabs in the 1948 Israeli War of Independence. The research in Dr. Milstein's book is outstanding and brilliant, it is history at its very best, a masterpiece. Although exceptionally free flowing and easy to read, it is a book that deal with "facts and footnotes" so that the reader is left with a clear understanding and comprehension of Israel's early history. It discusses Ben-Gurion's personality as a political and military leader, his strength and his weaknesses and his role in the development of early Israeli military history, it discusses the Haganah, the Palmach, the Irgun and the F.F.I. and the key figures in each of these organizations, their strengths and their weaknesses and the conflict and cooperation between Ben-Gurion's open Haganah and Palmach military operations and the underground organization originally established by Vladimir Jabotinski. Dr. Milstein writes as a true historian, without personal biases or prejudices, he presents the history of early Israel in an organized manner and lets the reader understand the factual reasoning behind all conclusions presented. This book should be required reading today for all persons interested in the history of Israel and the world of the Middle-East as it is at the start of the 21st Century.
Dr. Milstein is not only one of the most famous of all military historians in Israel, he is also a security analyst and philosopher, an expert on security matters, who is loved by many Israelis for his refusal to compromise the facts of history for personal political or financial gain. Many of his followers see him as a genius and one of the key fighters for academic truth in Israel today.
